Teckno2030 Caring Technology Principles - Marker Tool

Introduction

At the initiative of the King Baudouin Foundation and the Dr. Daniël De Coninck Fund, 8 guiding principles have been created from a collective reflection on the role of healthcare technology in our societies. Their current goal is to support the development of technologies that genuinely care for patients and are at the service of citizens and society.

A recurring request from players in the field (healthcare professionals and technology designers) was to make the principles as concrete as possible, and to assess to what extent, a technological solution meets the various principles.

This document presents a second version of the Marker tool. It should be used as an inspirational tool to help you evaluate and develop a technological solution meeting the caring technology principles.

How to use the Marker Tool

This tool is designed to help you either evaluate an existing health technology through the lens of caring technology  principles or  develop a health technology aligned with these principles.

The tool's concept is straightforward: to make the principles as concrete as possible, each principle is deconstructed into 3 specific objectives. For each objective, a marker has been defined, starting with a guiding question. You will need to answer this question by choosing the level already attained by your existing technology, or the level you wish to achieve for your future technology. Please note that some markers may not apply to your solution.

If possible, we recommend using this tool as a team, as the questions cover a wide range of dimensions related to the technology and its development, including topics such as patient involvement in the development process, security, and data-sharing considerations. It is not meant as a ‘tick the box’ tool but rather as a dialogue tool for innovation teams to reflect together on specific aspects of caring technology and to assess the current and the desired situation.
